Minister Encourages Food Entrepreneurs to form Partnerships with Food Companies to Strengthen their Capacity for Growth

Speaking at the 3rd Regional Food Showcase in the Crowne Plaza, Blanchardstown, Dublin, (Wednesday, 18th January) Minister of State Shane McEntee TD, said that the over-riding question among those showcasing their products here was "how can we strengthen our capacity for growth?". The Minister's solution to this was "Is ar scáth a chéile a mhairimid. We need partnerships and this Business to Business event is the ideal opportunity for networking".

The Minister spoke of the Bord Bia announcement last week regarding the strong growth in the Irish Food and Drink Exports sector. This growth opens up opportunities for the smaller producer to seize on and exploit. He recognised the tremendous challenges facing small producers but encouraged them to be optimistic saying "food is our success story and each of you here tonight are contributing to it".

Minister McEntee added that the food sector offers many facets and channels to the entrepreneur. He emphasised the growing food tourism sector. "Ireland is synonymous with green and we have excellent credentials in this regard. There is unlimited scope for all kinds of food experience for the tourist from casual food to fine dining".

In conclusion the Minister applauded the work carried out by his Department and Bord Bia and thanked the County Enterprise Boards, Enterprise Ireland, LEADER and Teagasc for participating in this event.

Notes for the Editor

  • This is a Business to Business (B2B) solution - to stimulate awareness and generate demand for local food on the demand and supply side in the East regional area.
  • Bord Bia have produced a Directory which provides details of almost 3,200 outlets for producers in the region and the vast majority of these are very interested in sourcing products from the region.
  • The Directory also contains names of nearly 260 food producers in the four participating counties.
