McEntee Officially Launches 2011 Irish Greyhound Derby

Speaking at the launch of the Irish Greyhound Derby 2011 at Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Shane McEntee TD, highlighted the importance of the greyhound racing industry. "The industry supports in excess of 10,000 full and part time jobs directly and indirectly, many in rural communities, and contributes an estimated €500 million in economic output to local economies around the tracks which are spread throughout the country."

The Minister said "The Derby is Irelands most prestigious Greyhound race and one of the most prominent races in the World.  It is currently the richest Greyhound Race in Europe and the Northern Hemisphere.  The excitement, anticipation, intrigue, the highs and lows of greyhound racing make the sport what it is today.  This is indeed a strong testament to the hard work and commitment of greyhound owners, breeders, trainers, sponsors, stadia personnel, members of the Board and executive of Bord na gCon".

The Minister said the event will be an excellent showcase for Irish sport throughout the world. I understand that this year it is hoped that Australian greyhounds will make the journey to compete in this fantastic Derby which will of course increase international interest.
