Minister Simon Coveney TD attends the Clonakilty Agricultural Show - 12th June 2011

Simon Coveney TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, attended the Clonakilty Agricultural Show at Clonakilty, Co. Cork.

The Minister said the show, which is over 100 years in existence is a major annual social occasion for Clonakilty and its hinterland.   It is a unique family day out where a wide range of pursuits and products on offer in rural Ireland can be perused.

Minister Coveney described the show as "an ideal occasion for both country and urban visitors to get a taste of what is best about West Cork.  There are a huge range of attractions for both young and old, from the traditional livestock classes to competitions for cookery and horticulture. Entrants have prepared for the show for months and I complement them for the high standard of entry and pursuit of excellence in their chosen category."

The Minister acknowledged the value of the agricultural sector to the rural economy of Cork 'Farmers and small food enterprises will play a central role in driving economic activity and job growth in the future. The agrifood sector can contribute significantly to our economic recovery and provide long-term growth into the future.  This area has a proud tradition of producing much sought after high value food products which have provided for a strong rural sector and will help contribute to this country's export led economic recovery."

The Minister took the opportunity of congratulating all the competitors and winners at the show and wished all visitors to the show an enjoyable day.
