Smith Officially opens Department's New Regional Office at Drumshanbo

First of 16 regional offices to have been enhanced under local office reorganisation plan

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD, today opened the new regional offices for his Department at Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim.

This regional office consolidates the operations of three former local offices providing District Veterinary, and Agricultural Environment and Structures support services for Leitrim, Longford and Sligo at one location as part of the Government's local office network reorganisation plan. This plan will result in financial savings of some 30 million Euro annually, when fully implemented and a reduction of over 400 staff.

Speaking at Drumshanbo, the Minister noted that the offices mark the "beginning of a new era in the provision of local services by my Department, as it is the first of 16 regional offices to have been enhanced under the Government's local office network reorganisation plan". He also commended local staff for "embracing the change required to establish this office under the new local office network plan".

The Minister also commented on the design of the building which he said "was a landmark in the Leitrim countryside" and had been built with sustainable principles in mind. He noted that it was Highly Commended at the 10th Annual OPUS Architecture and Construction Awards, held in Dublin in November 2009 and was short listed for an award in the Irish Concrete Society Awards for 2009.

Minister Smith took the opportunity to reiterate his determination to progress the implementation of the recent Food Harvest 2020 report. And the Minister believes that the farmers served by this new regional office, Leitrim, Longford and Sligo will play their part to contribute to the targets of Food Harvest 2020 and increase in the value of primary production for the region.
