Reminder Census of Agriculture 2010

The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Brendan Smith TD, would like to remind  all farmers to participate fully with the 2010 Census of Agriculture which will be conducted by the CSO tomorrow 1 June 2010.

By now all farmers should have received a questionnaire and an information booklet and it is important that the questionnaire is completed and returned to the CSO by the 8 June in the freepost pre-addressed envelope which will be provided for this purpose.

The Minister said that "It is essential that all farmers co-operate fully with this process as accurate Census results are crucial for forward planning of the sector.  The Census is particularly useful for measuring structural change, consolidation and the level of agricultural activity".

There is a statutory requirement upon all agricultural producers to complete their Census questionnaire. It is, however, recognised and accepted that the Census places a burden on respondents and in order to help reduce this burden the Department is co-operating with the CSO in making use of administrative records.  All information will be given to the CSO on a strictly confidential basis and in line with Irish and EU law on data protection.
