Coughlan Calls For Increased Support For Pigmeat Sector

At the Council of Ministers meeting today in Luxembourg, the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Mary Coughlan T.D., was joined by a large number of Member States in requesting the Commission to introduce export refunds to provide additional support for the pigmeat sector.

The Commission had already agreed in response to requests from a number of Member States, including Ireland, to introduce aid for private storage of pigmeat. However, in view of the current market difficulties the Minister pressed the Commission further today to provide additional support by introducing export refunds. The Commission indicated that the aid to private storage was the appropriate response at this time but undertook to keep the market situation under review.
