Wallace announces Special Conference on National Forest Inventory

Ms Mary Wallace T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, has announced a special one-day conference on 11th July 2007 in Portlaoise to present the results of the National Forest Inventory.

The Inventory, which was carried out by the Forest Service of the Department of Agriculture and Food, involved a detailed field survey of Ireland's forests to assess the composition and condition of the entire national forest estate, both public and private. The Inventory, the first such ever to be carried out at national level in this State, began in November 2004 and was completed on schedule in November 2006. Data processing and analysis have since been completed.

Announcing the conference, Minister Wallace commented "I am delighted to see the results of this important project being brought to public attention. This information is essential to facilitate the sustainable development of our forests and reminds us of the richness and diversity of our woodland resource".

The conference will focus on providing the background to the National Forest Inventory, sampling design, data analysis, and an overview of the key findings. "The Conference is open to all", Minister Wallace said, adding that while it would be of particular interest to those directly involved in the sector, the approach taken, the technology applied and the range of findings which have resulted would make it attractive to a very wide audience.

More information on the Conference and full registration details are posted on the Forest Service web page ( or can be obtained by writing to:
