West Awake to Emerging Marketing Opportunities

Speaking at the opening of the Fifth Regional Food Forum taking place in Claregalway this evening Mr Brendan Smith T.D., Minister of State with responsibility for Horticulture and Food, said that he was delighted to find that the "West was truly awake to the delights of regional and authentically produced foods".

The forum which was organised jointly by An Bord Bia and the Department of Agriculture and Food focussed on the development and expansion of local and regional food enterprises in the counties of Clare, Galway, Longford, Mayo and Roscommon.

The evening consisted of presentations by John McKenna on Authentic Irish Ingredients and Una Fitzgibbon, Manager Small Business Centre, Bord Bia on Emerging Market Opportunities, a panel of local food entrepreneurs whom the Minister acknowledged as "having so generously agreed to share their experiences" and a showcase of local foods.

The Food Agencies were available on the night to give advice on the assistance available to small food businesses. A Directory of Food & Drink companies in the West - a 'Who's Who' of food companies and development agencies (national and regional) - is available from Bord Bia.

Food companies in Clare, Galway, Longford, Mayo and Roscommon were invited to attend and regional produce from a selection of these companies was showcased at the event. The various development agencies and service providers involved in the food industry also attended.

The evening consisted of two presentations by industry experts followed by a panel discussion involving speakers who have developed food-related businesses. Significant time was also allocated for networking and agency showcasing. Food producers had the opportunity to meet with State agencies and service providers such as Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland, Irish Leader Network, County Enterprise Boards, Teagasc, etc.
