Minister Smith opens the Elphin Agriculture Show in Co. Roscommon

Speaking at the opening of the 29th Elphin Agriculture Show in Co. Roscommon, Mr Brendan Smith TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, said the that he believed that Agricultural Shows have the potential to inform the public about farming matters, food and countryside topics, as well as being a very important social event.

"Agricultural shows like Elphin Show play an important role in the social calendar of the farming community, however, in recent years shows have modified their focus to attract the diverse cross-section of people living in rural Ireland. These shows now include such a wide range of activities that they afford people the chance to enjoy a great family day out while at the same time having an opportunity to appreciate all that is best in rural life in Ireland."

Minister Smith complemented the quality of the livestock and the various entrants at the show. Acknowledging the dedication and the effort of each competitor, Minister Smith paid tribute to the judges who performed the difficult tack of selecting the winners. Minister Smith welcomed the generous sponsorship from the various sponsors, acknowledging their important role in Agriculture shows around the country. Minister Smith concluded by praising the hard work and the dedication of the Organising Committee and he complemented the Committee for making the Elphin show an enjoyable day for all concerned.
