Successful Food Forum in South East - Minister Smith launches Bord Bia guide to retail market for speciality food

Speaking at the opening of the Department of Agriculture and Food's 4th Regional Food Forum in Kilkenny this evening, organised in co-operation with An Bord Bia Mr. Brendan Smith T.D., Minister of State with responsibility for Food and Horticulture said that he was delighted to bring this very successful format to the South East.

The forum was attended by food producers from Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford and Wicklow and explored the emerging market opportunities. Presentations on marketing opportunities and regional food ingredients were made by Bord Bia, by John McKenna and local food entrepreneurs. The food development agencies were in attendance and local products were showcased.

Food safety matters of concern to producers were discussed at a joint Department of Agriculture and Food/Food Safety Authority of Ireland workshop.

The Minister was also launching the Bord Bia Guide to the Speciality Retail Market in Ireland. The Minister said that he personally recommended the guide which he said "provides the most up-to-date information on the speciality food retail market in Ireland and will facilitate producers in finding routes to market".

Food companies from Counties Kilkenny, Dublin, Wexford, Waterford, Kildare and Wicklow were invited to attend, and regional produce from some of these companies was showcased at the event. The various development agencies and service providers involved in the food industry also attended.

The evening consisted of two presentations by industry experts followed by a panel discussion involving speakers who have developed food-related businesses.

Significant time was also allocated for networking and agency showcasing. Food producers had the opportunity to meet with State agencies and service providers such as Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland, Irish Leader Network, County Enterprise Boards, Teagasc, etc.
