Minister Wallace visits Kilmoon Cross Nurseries in Co Meath - Leading Producer of Poinsettias for the Christmas Market

The Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, Mary Wallace TD on a visit to Kilmoon Nurseries today in Ashbourne, Co. Meath complimented the company on becoming a leading producer of flowering pot plants grown under glass for both indoor and outside use in the country.

Minister Wallace said that the Kilmoon Cross Nurseries was now one of the foremost producers of poinsettias in the country supplying many of the multiple outlets, garden centres and landscape gardeners and is competing successfully with nurseries on mainland Europe. "I attribute much of the success of Kilmoon Nurseries to their reliance on high quality Irish-grown produce and their willingness to adapt to new technology" said the Minister.

The Minister said that horticulture production was making a very significant contribution to the national and rural economy with a farm gate value in excess of €300m with the nursery stock sector, including floriculture, worth some €60m annually. The Minister said that the NDP programme has made a major contribution to the development of the nursery stock sector having leveraged investments of some €17m in it over the past five years. "I am pleased that my Department has been able to assist Kilmoon Nurseries through the provision of grant aid for their investment in state of the art facilities under the NDP Scheme of Investment Aid for Commercial Horticulture" concluded the Minister.
