Minister Coughlan launches Sheep Strategy Implementation Group

The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan T.D., today launched the inaugural meeting of the Sheep Strategy Implementation Group in Agriculture House. This Group will oversee the implementation of the recommendations contained in the recent report of the Sheep Industry Development Strategy Group.

"My aim for this Group is to provide a roadmap which will reinvigorate this industry which is worth €300 million per year. It is my intention that the necessary actions are taken now at all levels to ensure the future competitiveness of this very important sector of the farming and food industry" the Minister said.

The Group, includes representatives from the IFA, ICMSA, ICSA, the National Hill Sheep Farmers Association, Teagasc, Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland, Meat Industry Ireland and direct representatives of the Processors and Producers as well as the Department of Agriculture and Food. The Implementation Group will be chaired by Mr. John Malone, former Secretary General of the Department, who was also the author of the report of the Sheep Industry Development Strategy Group.

Minister Coughlan thanked the representatives who had agreed to participate in the implementation phase and wished them every success in their task.
