Minister Browne launches Booklet on Re-skilling for Farm Families in Wexford

Mr John Browne TD, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, today launched a booklet on re-skilling options for Farm Families in Wexford, which was co-ordinated by Wexford County Development Board.

The booklet entitled "Directory of Training for Farm Families" is aimed at improving returns from farm enterprises and to help in identifying new opportunities both on and off the farm.

Minister Browne said that agriculture and rural communities are facing unprecedented change at the present time. The introduction of the Single Payment scheme offers both opportunities and challenges for farm families. In future, agricultural production must be more focussed on meeting market and consumer demands. While farmers will have greater flexibility in deciding what to produce they will have to be considerably more market orientated than up to now. Education and training will provide the overall basis of skills and adaptability required.

"The fact that farmers need no longer produce to meet census dates or to qualify for specific premia payments gives farmers more options than up to now. Farmers can decide to develop new on-farm enterprises, expand into agri-tourism, decide to access off-farm employment or start a business or their own. The opportunities are endless. However, to exploit these many opportunities, having the right skills and the right training is essential."

Minister Browne concluded by praising the contents of this booklet as representing "an excellent source of information on a wide range of training courses in County Wexford".
