Forestry Development Programme

The Forestry Development Programme aims to support the objectives of the National Development Plan 2007-2013 by addressing structural weaknesses and development gaps in order to maximise the potential of the forestry sector.


The Forestry programme includes the following:

  • an Afforestation Scheme for both agricultural and (for the first time) non-agricultural land;   Afforestation Scheme Document (doc 172Kb)  
  • the Forest Environment Protection Scheme (FEPS): To encourage planting of high nature value forestry on REPS farms;  FEPS Scheme 2008 (pdf 205Kb) 
  • the Native Woodland Scheme, to promote the planting and conservation of Ireland's native woodland species; Native Woodland Scheme (pdf 172Kb) 
  • the Neighbourwood Scheme, to create new opportunities for the establishment of amenity woodlands;  NeighbourWood Scheme (pdf 174Kb) 
  • a Woodland Improvement Scheme, promoting the thinning and tending of established forests in order to maximise economic potential;

Forestry Promotion & Training

The overall objectives of the work undertaken by Forestry Division in relation to Forestry Promotion and Training are:

  • To promote knowledge on the sustainable management of forests;
  • To support vocational training;
  • To improve the overall performance and competitiveness of forests;
  • To help forest owners to increase their knowledge of forest management;
  • To raise awareness of the many benefits of forestry,and
  • To promote the development of Forestry Producer Groups.
