European Research Area Networks (ERA NETS)

The European Research Area Networks (ERA-NETS) are initiatives aimed at stepping up the cooperation and coordination of research activities carried out at national or regional level through the networking of research activities and the mutual opening of national and regional programmes. They provide a framework for actors implementing public research programmes to coordinate their activities and reduce the fragmentation of the European Research Area.

DAFM’s three competitive research funding programmes are used from time to time to fund Irish researcher collaboration with other EU Member States (and, sometimes countries such as New Zealand, USA and Canada) having emerged successfully from competitive ERA-NET application processes. The ERA-NET initiatives allow the EU to tackle the grand societal challenges of our time (food security, climate change, obesity, etc) in an integrated and cost effective manner. The initiatives also benefit Ireland by helping lever additional data/expertise/infrastructure and allow Irish-based researchers gain access to emerging consortia that are better placed to compete for larger awards under the EU Horizon 2020 programme funded directly by the Commission.

In many cases successful projects in the ERA-NET initiatives, can also benefit from top-up funding from the EU through Horizon 2020 under the ERA-NET Co-fund instrument. Funding provided by DAFM is limited to a set ceiling for each eligible Call and intending applicants will have to adhere to a set of national eligibility criteria.

Details (and final reports, if available) of the projects funded in previous era-net Calls under the three DAFM research programmes are available on the respective programme pages through the links below. Any ERA-NET call currently open for applicants is available under the open call link below.
