Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) - Public Consultation for proposed Afforestation Projects

Under the European Communities (Forest Consent and Assessment) Regulations 2010 (S.I. No. 558 of 2010), all afforestation projects, whether grant-aided or not, require the prior written approval of the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

Before the Minister can grant approval for any afforestation project, he must first assess the potential environment effect of the proposed development to determine whether a formal Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process is required.

Not all afforestation projects require an EIA.  An EIA is only required if (i) the project exceeds 50 hectares or (ii) the project is less than 50 hectares but is likely to have a significant effect on the environment.

The lists below give notice of the applications for afforestation approval that are currently being considered.  Any person can make a submission on the likely environmental effect of the proposed project within 4 weeks of the date of the notice.

Submissions, or requests for further information, must be made by post or e-mail.
Post to:  Approvals Section, Forest Service, Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Johnstown Castle Estate, Co. Wexford.
